does anyone watch this anymore?

Rick from DSM. Looking for other DSM ljer's. I don't bite, and I'm not really cool at all. I don't think this will be read by anyone. If you do read it, just say hi.

I finished with a novel manuscript. I'm trying to work through editing, but reading off of computer monitor is like staring at the sun. I don't want to abuse my home printer, but the manuscript is clocking in at 494 pages at the moment.

Anybody know a good printing place?

Does anyone here have experience living in Ames, IA?

If so, how did you like it? What would you say are its main strengths and weaknesses as a place to live, and how does it stack up against other places you've lived? (Bonus points if you have kids and/or are not a college student.)

Does anyone have a recommendation for an auto repair place that is open into the evenings (8 or 9ish) or on the weekends? Since it seems like most of the places I have gone to in the past are only open M-F 8-5, which doesn't work with my current work schedule.

Tree removal

Anyone have ideas/suggestions for reliable tree removal that doesn't require huge trucks? I have two large sycamores that need to be removed, and I have one quote, but I am concerned about large machinery in a small yard.

Does anyone here have recommendations for contractors in the Des Moines area to do possibly small, possibly not-so-small plumbing work? And on the flip side, anyone you would not recommend?

Wine! Latin Jazz!

Hey Des Moines peeps!!! Is anyone up for a trip to a winery? Excellent Latin jazz scheduled for the White Oak Winery tomorrow night...Ashanti...seriously considering it. The winery is pretty good too. Give it a think!

Indian Food!!!

There is - if you like Indian food - an excellent new restaurant in Ames. And Ames is not very far from Des Moines, of course. It is called Indian Delights, at 127 Dotson Drive, just off Lincolnway. The food is excellent and the people are nice. And of course there are other fun things in Ames also, such as Firehouse Books. Enjoy!

Looking for Picture Locations
I am looking for some on-location areas to have family pictures taken. It is myself and my 3 children. If you have any suggestions of parks, cool scenery, unique places, etc ... I would love to hear them so I can check the places out to see if they will work for us.

I'm looking at purchasing a home on 48th St, just north of University. What do you think of this neighborhood? Safe? Sketchy?

I need a home!
Hello my fellow Des Moinesians,

So, I'm currently couch-hopping and need to find a place to live. I was wondering if anyone here could help me out? I'm fairly broke so I'm trying to find something that doesn't run more than $300/month. Anyone know of any dirt cheap one bedrooms or someone who needs a roommate?

Any help is apreciated!

I'm back, sort of
Hello DSMers,

After a 10 month stint in Michigan, I'm returning to Des Moines on October 1. So what's changed in the past 10 months? I heard there's a Chipotle at Valley West now. What else? Anything cool up in the Jordan Creek area (where construction was ongoing when I left)?

I'm excited about returning. I missed you!

Anyone know of any good Halloween parties that will be happening in and around Des Moines that are aimed at adults?

So far the only one I've come across is being advertised at the Playhouse but 150 bucks a ticket is out of my budget range at the moment.

Computer sale
I was told the big computer sale is this weekend, I believe it's been at the fairgrounds in the past, but I hear it's at the iowa events center this year.

Could someone give me more information about it? a link perhaps?

I've never thought to post about this here and I don't know why. I know this community has been the first stop for a lot of us when relocating to Des Moines, and with many former Nebraskans in the area, perhaps this would be of interest to a couple of you.

The Iowans For Nebraska will be sponsoring three Husker game watch parties at the Chicken Coop Sports Bar this season. There will be door prizes, food and drink specials, and plenty of Nebraska fans to cheer with you. Also, the Chicken Coop also orders all (I think) of the pay-per-view games.

The place will be packed full of Husker fans for all games, but the official watch parties are:

08/30 vs. Western Mich.
10/11 vs. Texas Tech
11/01 vs. Oklahoma

Saturday's specials:

- $2.50 Coors Light Tall Boys
- 10 inch 1 topping pizza, 10 wings of one flavor, and a pitcher of domestic beer for $22.00

Hope to see some of you there!

Activity Ideas Needed
(Cross Posting to Personal Journal and DSM Communities)

I work with kids who have various mental and/or physical disabilities. This summer, I am working at a day camp with these children. We have planned different field trips for each day. Thanks to the wonderful Iowa weather, we are unable to do some of these activities. I am wondering what some of your ideas are for indoor (or only partially outdoor) things to do around town. We try to keep the cost down, but I know that isn't always an option. Wheelchair friendly activity suggestions are always appreciated.

Also, if you have any favorite ideas to keep kids busy inside on rainy days when we are unable to change our field trip and have to cancel it, I am always up for that. Sensory, games, crafts ..

Looking for fitness classes
Hi! I am new to the Des Moines area. I am looking for a place to take pilates classes, and/or a place that offers beginning ballet classes for adults. I'd prefer someplace located in West Des Moines, but I work downtown so I could swing that, too. Really, I'll take what I can get. :) Thanks for any suggestions!
